UVA is an active partner within the larger innovation ecosystem of Charlottesville, Albemarle, and the Central Virginia region.

Innovation is a key element of many initiatives across UVA, including school-based and community-facing programs, proof of concept funds, and startups.

UVA programs and initiatives provide resources that advance technology commercialization in Central Virginia and beyond.

Office of the Vice President for Research

The Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) coordinates with units that comprise UVA's research infrastructure and is involved in a broad array of activities relevant to innovation: the acquisition of research funding, the planning and development of academic research space, research commercialization, the incubation of new companies, and the recruiting of corporate research partners to local research parks.

In FY2018, the UVA research enterprise generated $470 million in total expenditures with sponsored programs totaling $312 million in funding.

Licensing & Ventures Group

The UVA Licensing & Ventures Group (LVG) manages intellectual property and technology commercialization for UVA's research portfolio. LVG solicited and/or received 213 invention disclosures from UVA faculty, staff, and students; executed 77 commercial transactions; issued a record 59 patents; and launched three new ventures in FY2018 alone.

LVG created the the $10 million UVA LVG Seed Fund to launch and support new ventures emerging from the University portfolio.

Proof of concept funds total 2+ million per year and accelerate translational research projects.

i.Lab at UVA

The i.Lab at UVA, open to the public, provides programs, funding, workspace, community, and mentorship to support new entrepreneurs and accelerate new ventures.

NSF I-Corps Program

UVA's NSF I-Corps program introduces STEM scicentists and engineers to real-world, hands-on training that helps move ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace. 


UVA-Related Startup Profiles

Many innovations discovered at UVA grow into successful startups that benefit communities and citizens. In Virginia, UVA-related startups are creating impact by:
