Join us for a celebration of partnership between UVA and UVA-Wise that will explore collaborative advancements in community capacity building, health, and economic development. A one-day symposium will showcase the progress of the Appalachian Prosperity Project that is addressing today’s most pressing challenges in far Southwest Virginia. Learn about the strong community ties that make this work possible. Engage with partners. Discover new and existing opportunities for collaborations that build bridges. Envision a future for our partnership that helps us better serve Appalachia.

Description

Join the UVA Office of Economic Development; Chancellor Price Henry; the UVA-Wise Office of Economic Development & Engagement; and the faculty, staff, students, and community of UVA and UVA-Wise for a celebration of partnership that will:

  • Showcase the progress of the Appalachian Prosperity Project and work that is addressing today's most pressing challenges.
  • Promote connections and collaboration between UVA, UVA-Wise, and current and prospective partners.
  • Create awareness around opportunities that will allow attendees to discover new collaborations.
  • Envision a future for the Appalachian Prosperity Project and the UVA - UVA-Wise partnership.

Topics


Sessions will utilize lightning round updates, question and answer segments, table activities, and community discussion to consider three topics:

  • Partnering to Build Capacity
  • Partnering to Build Healthy Communities
  • Partnering to Spur Sustainable Economic Development, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation
Appalachian Prosperity Project Fellowships

Fellowships will be awarded to ideas that build bridges and facilitate partnerships between UVA and UVA-Wise.

Two $5,000 fellowships will be awarded to partnerships that build bridges between UVA and UVA-Wise. 

Funding will allow faculty from UVA and UVA-Wise to co-develop an idea that addresses issues facing Appalachia, specifically related to the Symposium topics: Building Capacity, Building Healthy Communities, and Spurring Economic Development & Innovation.

Preference will be given to proposals that feature a faculty member in attendance at the Symposium.

Fellowships will spur collaboration towards research proposals and student engagement.

Directions & Parking

The UVA Colonnade Club is located in Pavilion VII, West Lawn. When facing the Rotunda, Pavilion VII is on the left. There is also access from McCormick Rd through Colonnade Alley. See a map here.

UVA's Newcomb Hall is located at 180 McCormick Rd. From Alderman Library, travel past the Special Collections Library and Peabody Hall. Take a right to enter Newcomb Hall at the third floor entrance. From the UVA Bookstore, travel through the Newcomb Plaza to enter the building at the first floor entrance. See a map here.

Parking is available at the Central Grounds Garage. Registered guests who indicate their need for parking will receive validation information by email.

The Appalachian Prosperity Project is a university-community-industry partnership among the University of Virginia, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Planning Districts 1 and 2, the private sector, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The project is designed to advance health, education, and economic prosperity in Southwest Virginia. Programming includes health care delivery via clinics and telemedicine, community capacity building, and resources that enhance the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
